Markus Rawiel and Christian Dors not only took advantage of the opportunity for further education, but also combined it with something meaningful: the development of an innovative control system for solar collectors. The two state-certified technicians, freshly awarded by the Heinrich Hertz – Berufskolleg in Düsseldorf, report with a noticeable amount of pride: “We made a conscious decision to pursue further education because it opens up a broad professional perspective. It was a huge opportunity to combine the individual techniques and areas of our work into an overall system as part of the exam assignment.” says Markus Rawiel, and Christian Dors adds: “We are grateful that REO AG gave us the opportunity to deepen our knowledge in the field of electrical engineering.” The whole project was a great example of interdisciplinary work.“ The two received support from their colleague Marvin Grüten.
The aim of the project was the complete development of a networked MPPT solar charge controller with a graphical user interface. In this system, several solar collectors capture solar energy and pass it on to a controller. The controller charges an accumulator, which, in island mode, provided a minimum state of charge is present, can be used as an energy source for connected systems at any time.
Since the optimal operating point for solar modules is not constant, but depends, among other things, on the radiation intensity, the temperature on the solar module and, finally, on the type of solar cells, the technicians have installed an MPPT (Maximum-Peak-Point-Tracking). MPPT is a method in which the electrical load of the solar modules connected in series is adapted in such a way that the greatest possible power can always be drawn from the solar cells. The energy yield increases significantly and a wide variety of solar modules can be combined without any problems. In practice, this is often the case when older modules are supplemented with newer ones.
The newly developed system is suitable for both small solar systems and large series connections. The two REO technicians had to develop their own bus system for this, which connects several controllers, various sensors and actuators. “This was one of the biggest challenges,” recalls their colleague Marvin Grüten and continues: we had to program all ATMega type microcontrollers ourselves. This was the only way we could guarantee the correct execution of the control tasks and the communication between the bus participants . In such large systems, a self-developed LC display serves as the user interface and central control unit.
REO AG promotes the internal further training of its employees. In this case, the company provided material and enabled technical assistance from specialist departments.
The state-certified technician is a further training measure. A prerequisite for participation is a completed vocational training and at least one year of professional experience must be proven by the day of the examination.
